In a significant political development, Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi has been appointed as the new chair of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee. His election comes as a leadership shift within the committee, with Atandi replacing Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. The transition, which saw Atandi elected unopposed, signals a growing trend of bipartisan collaboration between political heavyweights, President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Atandi’s nomination has been welcomed by key figures across the political spectrum. Prominent MPs, including Jematia and Mwashako, lent their support to the Alego Usonga representative, affirming their trust in his leadership capabilities. His election, largely seen as a unifying move, has been viewed as an effort to bring stability and balance to the committee that plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s budgetary and financial policies.
The Budget and Appropriations Committee is crucial in ensuring the government’s financial resources are allocated and spent efficiently. With a reputation for being a strategic and experienced politician, Atandi’s appointment has been hailed as a testament to his political acumen and his capacity to manage one of the most critical committees in Kenya’s parliamentary system.
The unopposed election of Atandi also stands as a clear indication of the broader political environment in Kenya. As President Ruto and Raila Odinga continue to explore areas of cooperation, such a significant appointment marks a tangible sign of bipartisanship. For years, the country’s political landscape has been divided along partisan lines, but this move demonstrates that collaboration is now becoming a central theme in governance.

The support from MPs across the political divide reflects the growing understanding between the two main political factions, as they seek to work together for the benefit of the country. This collaboration is particularly important at a time when Kenya faces numerous economic challenges, and the efficiency of the Budget and Appropriations Committee will be crucial in ensuring that financial resources are effectively utilized to address key national priorities.
Atandi’s leadership will be tested as he navigates the complexities of Kenya’s financial allocations and works towards fiscal discipline. His ability to bridge the gap between competing interests and bring together a unified approach to budgetary decisions will be a defining aspect of his tenure. However, with the backing of a bipartisan coalition, Atandi is poised to steer the committee through these challenges, fostering an environment where political differences are set aside for the greater good of the nation.
As Kenya moves forward, this development underscores a shift toward greater cooperation between the government and opposition parties, signaling a new chapter in the country’s political landscape. The appointment of Samuel Atandi is a clear indication that, despite the historical divisions, the leaders of both sides are willing to work together for the collective progress of the nation.
Today, I am privileged to be elected as the Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee of the National Assembly. I want to assure the House and all Kenyans that I will work to the best of my ability as Chair to ensure the equitable distribution of government resources across the country, in line with the foundation of the broad-based government MOU.
Many thanks to H.E. President William Ruto, the Rt.Hon.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and the ODM party House leadership. I extend my sincere gratitude to the leadership of the National Assembly, my colleagues for unanimously electing me, and all those who have placed their trust in me for this critical responsibility.
